Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds

Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds emerged in 1981 as an ambitious international co-production between the Japanese studio Nippon Animation and the Spanish studio BRB Internacional. Created to bring the classic narrative of Alexandre Dumas’s The Three Musketeers to a younger audience, the series reimagined the iconic characters as anthropomorphic dogs. The project was conceived by Claudio Biern Boyd, who sought to blend the storytelling traditions of European literature with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Japanese animation industry, which was then gaining global prominence through high-quality adaptations of classic tales.

The character designs were heavily influenced by the style of veteran director Tetsu Imazawa, who worked alongside a team of animators tasked with capturing the swashbuckling spirit of the original novel while maintaining the warmth required for a children's series. The show’s orchestral score and vibrant, expressive cel animation were instrumental in its success, helping it achieve widespread popularity across Europe and Latin America. It is remembered today as a defining example of the cross-cultural animation partnerships that flourished during the early 1980s.
