Where it came from
Dohyou no Oni-tachi, also known as Sumo Wrestler Demons, was produced by Studio DEEN in 1994 as an original video animation. It emerged during a period when the studio was heavily involved in producing niche-market animation projects, often focusing on folklore or lighthearted sports themes tailored for the direct-to-video market that flourished in Japan throughout the early 1990s.
The production sought to blend the traditional, highly ritualized world of professional sumo with elements of supernatural fantasy. While the visual direction reflects the standard cel-animation aesthetic characteristic of Studio DEEN's output from the mid-nineties, the project remains an obscure title within their extensive filmography, primarily recognized by dedicated collectors of 90s era OVAs rather than mainstream animation audiences.
