Where it came from
The 1980 NHK-produced anime series Don Quixote was created as an ambitious adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes' literary masterpiece, aimed at bringing classic Western literature to a broader Japanese television audience. Produced during a period when Japanese animation studios were increasingly exploring high-quality literary adaptations, the series sought to balance the whimsical nature of the protagonist's delusions with the satirical edge of the original sixteenth-century novel.
The visual direction and character designs for this production were crafted to translate the stark landscapes of La Mancha into the vibrant, expressive language of cel animation. While the series took certain creative liberties to ensure accessibility for younger viewers, it was widely praised for its faithful adherence to the spirit of the narrative, establishing a reputation as one of the more thoughtful, enduring interpretations of Quixote's journey to appear in the medium of anime.
