Donguri to Yamaneko (1995)

Donguri to Yamaneko, or The Acorn and the Wildcat, is a 1995 short animated film directed by Isao Takahata for Studio Ghibli. It was adapted from the beloved 1924 short story by Kenji Miyazawa, a seminal figure in Japanese children's literature known for his surreal and deeply atmospheric narratives. The production serves as a testament to Ghibli's ongoing interest in bringing classical Japanese literary works to a contemporary audience through traditional cel animation.

The film's visual identity was established through the distinct, sketchbook-like aesthetic of artist Michio Mamiya, who worked closely with Takahata to capture the whimsical yet melancholic tone of Miyazawa's original text. Upon its release, it was lauded for its artistic integrity and its successful translation of Miyazawa's complex prose into a visual medium, further cementing the studio’s reputation for producing thoughtful, auteur-driven animation that bridges the gap between folklore and modern cinema.
