The story centers on an RPG that people call "kusoge" ("crap-tier game," referring to games with quirky or badly implemented mechanics and design). The main character Lidays decides to change the game's story, meeting with other characters while the game isn't being played. But as they flub their lines, the situation spirals out of control.

Where it came from
Released in 2020 by the Japanese studio Charaction, 'Don't Call Us A JUNK GAME!' is an original net animation (ONA) produced to provide a meta-commentary on the Japanese gaming industry. It emerged during a period of heightened discourse surrounding the 'kusoge' phenomenon—a Japanese term referring to 'trash games' that are intentionally or unintentionally poor in quality yet often possess a cult following. The project functions as a satirical exploration of the frustrations, technical limitations, and development cycles that lead to these titles.
The creative direction behind the project leaned into a self-aware, comedic aesthetic that mirrors the chaotic energy of the games it critiques. By centering on the developers and the players who engage with these flawed titles, the animation attempts to reframe the narrative of what constitutes a 'junk game.' While it remained a niche production within the broader ONA landscape, it was noted by animation enthusiasts for its stylistic commitment to portraying the absurdity of the video game development process.
