Where it came from
Donten, or 'Cloudy Weather,' is a celebrated work within the Japanese manga landscape, conceptualized and illustrated by Karakara-Kemuri. Serialized in the seinen magazine Monthly Comic Garden, the series was designed to blend historical fiction with supernatural elements, drawing heavily on Meiji-era aesthetics to ground its fantastical narrative. The creator aimed to explore the burden of duty and the complexities of sibling bonds, situating the characters within a fictionalized version of a gateway prison in Shiga Prefecture.
Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic standout, noted for its sharp character designs and atmospheric paneling. It effectively captured a specific gothic-romantic tone that resonated with readers of the genre, eventually leading to a successful anime adaptation and a live-action film. The work is widely regarded as a significant contribution to the early 21st-century historical fantasy boom in Japan, maintaining a dedicated following for its emotional resonance and thematic depth.
