Where it came from
Released in 1987, this special production represents a unique convergence of two iconic mecha series from the Sunrise library: Fang of the Sun Dougram and Combat Mecha Xabungle, which featured the Round-facer unit. This release emerged during a period when the studio sought to capitalize on the sustained popularity of its 'real robot' genre hits, offering fans a narrative crossover that pitted the two distinct mechanical design philosophies against one another.
The visual design of these units reflects the gritty, utilitarian aesthetic established by Kunio Okawara, who served as the primary mechanical designer for both franchises. By emphasizing industrial, grounded engineering over the stylized aesthetics of earlier superhero-style robots, the production sought to satisfy a growing audience that favored tactical realism and modular components in their science fiction storytelling.
