Where it came from
Dracula no Uta, or 'Song of Dracula,' debuted on the long-running NHK musical program Minna no Uta in 1975. Created during a period when the network sought to introduce whimsical, slightly macabre storytelling to its young audience, the short film features a gentle, melancholy composition by Koichi Morita. It serves as a classic example of the mid-70s Japanese animation style, utilizing a soft, illustrative aesthetic that contrasts with the traditional expectations of horror imagery.
The animation was directed by Yasuji Mori, a veteran of Toei Animation, whose influence on early televised anime remains profound. Mori designed the protagonist as a sympathetic, lonely figure rather than a terrifying monster, a stylistic choice intended to subvert tropes and evoke empathy from viewers. The piece was well-received for its evocative atmosphere and remains a cult favorite among fans of the Showa-era animation archives, often cited for its enduringly haunting melody.
