Where it came from
Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker was produced in 2012 as a collaborative effort between the video game developer BioWare and the Japanese animation studio Funimation. The film was developed to expand the lore of the Dragon Age franchise, serving as a prequel focused on the character Cassandra Pentaghast during her earlier years as a Seeker of the Chantry. Its production represented a trend of major gaming studios partnering with established anime houses to translate Western fantasy properties into the visual language of Japanese animation.
The film was directed by Fumihiko Sori, who was chosen for his experience with CGI-heavy productions, aiming to blend 3D computer animation with a distinct anime aesthetic. Upon its release, it received mixed reactions from critics and the established Dragon Age fan base; while the action sequences and world-building were generally noted as faithful to the game's atmosphere, some reviewers found the narrative depth and character development to be less compelling than the interactive source material.
