Adaptation of Marvel Comics Tomb of Dracula comic book series.
In contemporary Boston, Dracula gatecrashes a Satanic ritual and makes off with the intended sacrifice, Delores. Overcome with love for her, he's unable to drink her blood and instead settles down with her and fathers a child, Janus. But Dracula's enemies are massing against him: a team of vampire hunters, including the wheelchair-bound Hans Harker, crossbow wielding and new recruit Frank Drake, a descendant of Dracula, are closing in. And Dracula has been stripped of his vampire powers by Satan. He desperately needs another vampire to restore his powers so that he can both see off his pursuers and avenge the death of Janus at the hands of vengeful Satanists.

Where it came from
Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned was produced in 1980 by Toei Animation as a standalone television special, capitalizing on the mid-70s surge of interest in horror themes within the Japanese animation industry. It was based loosely on Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman’s run of The Tomb of Dracula for Marvel Comics, representing a cross-cultural collaboration that sought to blend Western gothic horror tropes with the stylistic sensibilities of late-era disco-influenced anime character design.
The production is notable for its unusually dark and mature narrative tone, which deviated significantly from the typical shonen anime of the period. Directed by Akinori Nagaoka, the project aimed to translate the episodic, dramatic flair of the Marvel source material into a feature-length format. While the animation style was often criticized for its uneven quality, the special remains a point of interest for collectors as a historical bridge between American comic book storytelling and the evolving international reach of Japanese animation studios.
