Where it came from
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, released in Japan in 1990, stands as the third feature film in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. Produced by Toei Animation during the height of the series' popularity, the film was designed to capitalize on the success of the television broadcast. It introduces Turles, a space pirate whose appearance mirrors that of the protagonist, Goku, serving as a dark reflection of what the hero might have become had he not been raised by humans.
The film was directed by Daisuke Nishio, a veteran of the Dragon Ball series, who maintained the high-octane aesthetic established in previous installments. While the plot was largely formulaic, adhering to the standard structure of a Z-fighter battle against a new threat, it is remembered by enthusiasts for its imaginative world-building and the striking visual design of the titular tree, which consumes the life force of the planet. Upon its release, it was received as a solid, if conventional, entry that solidified the franchise's cinematic presence in the early nineties.
