Where it came from
Drawer Hobs was produced by Production I.G as part of the 2011 Anime Mirai project, an initiative funded by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs to nurture domestic animators. The project aimed to address concerns regarding the industry's reliance on outsourcing by providing training for young artists through the creation of high-quality short films.
The film was directed by Kazuchika Kise, a veteran character designer and animator known for his meticulous attention to detail. The design philosophy centered on a whimsical, hand-drawn aesthetic that showcased the studio's technical prowess, resulting in a narrative that emphasizes the intersection of childhood imagination and traditional artistry. It was well-received by critics for its visual charm and served as a successful demonstration of the mentoring mission behind the Anime Mirai initiative.
