Where it came from
Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire, known in Chinese as Lie Huo Jiao Chou, was produced by bilibili and released as an ONA in 2021. It is an adaptation of the popular web novel by Priest, a prominent author in the danmei genre. The story blends contemporary urban fantasy with elements of ancient mythology, centering on the complex relationship between two protagonists who are resurrected into the modern world.
The production utilized a mix of 3D animation techniques characteristic of contemporary Chinese animation trends to realize its high-fantasy combat sequences. Directed by Xiong Ke, the series sought to balance the intricate world-building of the source material with a visual aesthetic that appealed to both loyal readers of the original novel and new audiences. It was generally well-received for its ambitious scope and the faithful translation of the atmospheric tension found in Priest's writing.
