Where it came from
Dropout Idol Fruit Tart originated as a manga series by Sou Hamayumiba, serialized in Manga Time Kirara Carat starting in 2014. The narrative follows a group of struggling former child stars and hopefuls living in a dormitory, attempting to launch an idol unit to save their home from demolition. The television adaptation was produced by studio feel. and aired in 2020, aiming to blend typical idol genre tropes with a self-aware, comedic perspective on the competitive nature of the entertainment industry.
The character designs were overseen by Sumie Kinoshita, who sought to capture the distinct aesthetic typical of the Kirara manga style while emphasizing the eccentric personalities of the Fruit Tart members. The series was designed to be a lighthearted subversion of idol culture, focusing on the scrappy, underdog dynamic of the cast. Upon its release, it was received as a niche entry in the idol anime genre, noted specifically for its absurdist humor and the peculiar struggles of its protagonists.
