Where it came from
Dropout was produced by Studio EDGE and released as an original video animation (OVA) in 2016. It emerged during a period of experimentation within the independent anime sector, where smaller studios sought to distinguish themselves through niche aesthetics and unconventional narrative structures that often bypassed the traditional constraints of television broadcast requirements.
The work is recognized for its minimalist visual approach, which prioritizes atmosphere and character-driven vignettes over elaborate animation sequences. While it received a modest reception upon release, it has since maintained a quiet reputation among collectors of late-2010s experimental OVA projects who value its departure from the mainstream stylistic trends prevalent in that era.
