Where it came from
The 2017 iteration of the Duel Masters anime series, titled Duel Masters (2017) or Duel Masters! in Japan, was produced by Ascension and aired on TV Tokyo. This series served as a soft reboot for the long-running franchise, marking a transition in narrative focus and character design to align with the evolving mechanics of the accompanying trading card game. It was conceived to refresh the brand for a younger generation of viewers while maintaining the franchise's signature blend of high-stakes dueling and comedic elements.
The visual direction and character designs were crafted to distinguish this entry from the preceding Duel Masters VS and VSR series. The animation team at Ascension aimed for a more stylized, expressive aesthetic to complement the new card mechanics introduced in the game's core sets. Upon release, the series was received as a continuation of the franchise's stable presence in Japanese daytime television, valued by fans of the card game for its direct thematic ties to the latest product releases.
