Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure Special

The Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure special was released in 1999 as a standalone episode following the conclusion of the 13-episode anime series produced by AIC. The series was designed as a lighthearted science fiction romp, drawing heavy thematic and visual inspiration from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, specifically parodying its darker psychological elements with a more comedic, harem-style narrative. Directed by Katsuhito Akiyama, the production aimed to capitalize on the late 90s trend of mecha anime while offering a more accessible, humorous counterpoint to the more serious titles of the era.

The character designs were handled by Kazuhiro Soeta, who sought to create a distinct, approachable look that fit the show's vibrant, colorful aesthetic. When the special was released to wrap up loose ends and provide fans with additional content, it was received as a modest extension of the show's cult following. While the series as a whole is often remembered for its tongue-in-cheek homage to Gainax-style storytelling, the special remains a niche piece of late 90s animation history, appreciated primarily by those who enjoyed the original series' subversion of mecha tropes.
