Earthian

Earthian was produced by J.C.Staff in 1989 as an original video animation series, based on the manga by Yun Kouga. Set against a backdrop of interplanetary observation, the story follows two angelic entities sent to Earth to assess whether humanity has become too destructive to survive. The series emerged during a period of experimentation in the late 1980s OVA market, where animation studios frequently adapted stylized, atmospheric shōjo-influenced manga for the burgeoning home video demographic.

The character designs and visual aesthetic reflect the distinct, elongated, and elegant art style prevalent in late 80s and early 90s shōjo manga, prioritizing ethereal character portraits and emotive compositions. By focusing on themes of environmental stewardship and moral ambiguity, the animation captured a specific cultural concern of the era regarding human impact on the planet. While the OVA served as a vehicle to promote the source material, it remains notable for its contribution to the celestial fantasy subgenre of that decade.
