Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald's Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it's been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald's, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that...but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who's boss.

Where it came from
Earwig and the Witch was released in 2020 as the first feature-length production from Studio Ghibli to be entirely animated using 3D CGI. Directed by Goro Miyazaki and based on the 2011 children's novel by Diana Wynne Jones, the film marks a significant departure from the studio's traditional hand-drawn aesthetic. The production was spearheaded by Hayao Miyazaki, who identified the source material as a strong candidate for adaptation, aiming to explore new technical frontiers while maintaining the storytelling depth synonymous with the studio.
The film's visual departure prompted varied critical reactions, with many commentators focusing on the transition from the studio's classic cel-shaded style to computer-generated assets. Despite the stylistic shift, the project remains a notable entry in Ghibli's filmography, illustrating the studio's willingness to experiment with contemporary animation technologies. It was produced by Toshio Suzuki and debuted at the Lumière Film Festival before its broader theatrical and streaming release, solidifying its place as a bold, if controversial, evolution in the studio's technical history.
