Where it came from
Edens Zero was adapted into an animated television series in 2021 by J.C. Staff, based on the manga series by Hiro Mashima. Released in the context of a growing demand for space-fantasy anime, the production sought to translate Mashima's signature blend of high-energy shonen action and futuristic world-building into a cohesive visual experience. The series follows Shiki Granbell and his companions as they navigate the Sakura Cosmos, exploring themes of friendship and digital connectivity that define the source material.
The character designs and animation direction were aimed at maintaining the expressive, bold aesthetic synonymous with Mashima’s previous works, such as Fairy Tail. J.C. Staff utilized a mix of traditional 2D animation and 3D digital environments to capture the scope of the various planets featured in the narrative. Upon its release, the adaptation was noted for its commitment to the sprawling, adventurous spirit of the manga, receiving particular attention for its central focus on the interconnectedness of its cast in a vast sci-fi setting.
