ef: a tale of memories. - prologue

The prologue to 'ef: a tale of memories.' was released in 2007 as a promotional short designed to introduce audiences to the visual and narrative style of the upcoming anime adaptation. Produced by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, the short served as a bridge between the original visual novel, developed by minori, and the television series directed by Shin Oonuma at studio Shaft. Its creation was intended to showcase the avant-garde aesthetic and experimental cinematography that would define the franchise's later run.

The project is noted for its departure from standard animation conventions, leaning heavily into the distinctive surrealist techniques favored by Shaft. The visual direction aimed to translate the complex, non-linear storytelling of the source material into a motion-based medium, prioritizing atmospheric immersion over straightforward exposition. Upon its release, the prologue was well-received by fans of the visual novel for successfully capturing the melancholic and highly stylized essence of the original characters.
