Where it came from
Egao ga Kaze ni Modoru Toki, or When Smiles Return to the Wind, is a poignant television special produced by NHK. It was created in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake to provide comfort and hope to survivors, particularly children, who were displaced or traumatized by the disaster. The production reflects NHK's commitment to public service broadcasting, utilizing gentle animation and storytelling to process collective grief and encourage emotional recovery.
The design and narrative approach were crafted by NHK's creative teams to be intentionally soft and accessible. By focusing on themes of resilience and the return of normalcy, the special emphasizes the importance of community support. It was received as a sensitive piece of outreach media, serving as a cultural touchstone for how Japanese public media attempted to address the mental health needs of a nation during a period of significant national mourning.
