Eguchi Hisashi no NANTOKA NARUDESHO!

Released in 1990, Eguchi Hisashi no NANTOKA NARUDESHO! is a collection of short animated vignettes adapted from the manga works of Hisashi Eguchi. Produced by the renowned Studio Madhouse, the OVA sought to translate Eguchi's signature aesthetic—characterized by elegant character designs, particularly his iconic depictions of young women—into a medium that could capture the surreal, pop-culture-infused comedy prevalent in his print work.

The project was overseen by directors who navigated the challenges of anthology-style storytelling, aiming to preserve the stylistic quirks that made Eguchi a defining figure in late 1980s Japanese illustration. While the animation served as a distinct departure from the more mainstream shonen fare of the era, it was received as a stylish, niche cult artifact that prioritized visual charm and ironic humor over conventional narrative arcs.
