Embracing Love: A Cicada in Winter

Embracing Love: A Cicada in Winter is a two-episode original video animation released in 2007 by Kitty Media. Adapted from the manga series Embracing Love by Youka Nitta, the production emerged during a period of rising interest in the boys' love genre within international anime markets. The narrative follows the complex and often turbulent relationship between two actors who find their professional rivalry evolving into an intense personal bond, a thematic staple for Nitta’s work that focuses heavily on character dynamics and melodrama.

The animation style was designed to capture the expressive, slender character aesthetic characteristic of Nitta’s original illustrations. While the production faced scrutiny from fans of the source material regarding its faithfulness and pacing, it remains a notable example of mid-2000s boutique anime licensing. It serves as a historical artifact of the era’s efforts to translate long-form seinen-style boys' love manga into the OVA format, balancing atmospheric storytelling with the specific stylistic conventions of the studio.
