Emerald

The emerald, a gemstone variety of the mineral beryl, has been prized since antiquity for its distinctive vibrant green hue, caused by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Historically, these stones were primarily sourced from Egypt's Cleopatra Mines, later eclipsed by the discovery of vast, high-quality deposits in Colombia during the 16th century. This shift fundamentally altered the global luxury market, as Spanish conquistadors introduced these stones to Europe, cementing their status as symbols of status and regal power.

The design and appreciation of the emerald have been shaped by the challenges of cutting the stone, which is often brittle due to naturally occurring inclusions known as 'jardin'. Lapidaries developed the specific 'emerald cut'—a rectangular or square step cut with cropped corners—to protect the gem from mechanical stress during setting and to maximize its internal brilliance. Over centuries, this aesthetic has remained a hallmark of fine jewelry, favored for its geometric precision and ability to highlight the stone’s intense coloration.
