In the children's room of the Amanogawa household in the neighborhood of Shichifukujin, there are five Engimon: Haruo (a papier-mache dog), Kin-chan (a goldfish paper balloon), Hebikura (a bamboo snake), Chief Daruma (a daruma doll), and Koume (a Kokeshi doll). They are always watching over the siblings of the household, Himi and Yamato. One day, an Engimon from somewhere else appears, and Himi leaves the house to chase it. Haruo and his friends come alive, much to Yamato's surprise, and together they go to rescue Himi.

Where it came from
Engimon was produced in 2018 by the independent studio Usagi.Ou, emerging during a period of experimentation within digital animation circles. The project was conceived as an exploration of creature-based character design, drawing heavily on aesthetic traditions of early 21st-century creature-collector media while pivoting toward a more stylized, minimalist visual language. It was intended to showcase the studio's technical capacity for fluid motion and atmospheric world-building on a modest production scale.
The character designs and core visuals were crafted by the internal team at Usagi.Ou, who sought to blend traditional cel-shaded techniques with contemporary digital rendering. Upon its release, the film was largely received within niche animation communities as a notable exercise in visual storytelling. While it did not receive a wide international theatrical distribution, it has been recognized for its coherent art direction and its contribution to the independent experimental animation scene of the late 2010s.
