Eto wa Merry-Go-Round

Eto wa Merry-Go-Round is a charming stop-motion animation short produced by NHK for its long-running children's music program, Minna no Uta. First broadcast in the late 20th century, the piece was designed to introduce the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac to a young audience. The production exemplifies the signature aesthetic of NHK's educational shorts, utilizing tactile, craft-based puppet animation that remains a staple of Japanese public broadcasting's visual identity.

The production leans into a whimsical, carousel-inspired visual theme, matching the rhythmic nature of the song to the circular, repetitive motion of the zodiac figures. The animation was executed by NHK’s dedicated production team, who prioritized a warm, accessible aesthetic to ensure the zodiac sequence was both memorable and educational. The segment was well-received by its target demographic, becoming a nostalgic touchstone for generations of Japanese viewers who grew up with the program's recurring musical features.
