Provenance

Where it came from

EX-ARM was produced as a Crunchyroll Original series, adapting the science fiction manga series of the same name by HiRock and Shin-ya Komi. The project was intended to bring a high-concept cyberpunk narrative to the screen, exploring themes of advanced artificial intelligence and body-swapping technology. The series was developed as an ambitious attempt to utilize three-dimensional computer-generated animation for the entirety of its production.

The production design faced significant challenges during its creation, ultimately resulting in animation techniques that diverged sharply from conventional anime aesthetics. Upon its 2021 release, the series became a subject of intense discussion among animation critics and viewers. It is primarily recognized today as a notable case study regarding the difficulties and aesthetic complexities inherent in integrating 3D animation workflows into long-form television series.
