Where it came from
Released in 2002 by Bandai Visual, éX-Driver the Movie serves as a cinematic continuation of the original six-episode original video animation series created by Kosuke Fujishima. The story takes place in a future where autonomous, self-driving vehicles have become the standard, necessitating a specialized team of human drivers, known as éX-Drivers, to manually intervene when these automated systems malfunction or become erratic.
The film was produced to expand upon the high-octane vehicular action and character dynamics established in the OVA, with animation duties handled by Actas and Visual 80. The production sought to balance the technical fascination with classic automobiles—a hallmark of Fujishima's aesthetic—against the narrative tension of man versus machine. It was received as a stylish, nostalgic piece of early 2000s anime that emphasized retro automotive design and precision-focused choreography.
