The future is bleak and urbanized. A government super-power holds the keys to all the doors. Hope lies in a secret organization who kidnaps "gifted" children and teaches them to wield their ability to view the life energy of all living things. Where it came from
E.Y.E.S. of Mars, known in Japan as Kasei Yōjo, was produced by Toei Animation and released in 1993. The film was conceived as an ambitious science fiction anime project, drawing inspiration from the speculative and often space-themed literature that permeated the era. It was intended to showcase Toei's evolving animation capabilities during the early 1990s, aiming to blend traditional cel animation with complex narrative structures involving interplanetary exploration and environmental themes.
The production sought to carve out a niche within the competitive market for feature-length anime films, with the design team focusing on vibrant character aesthetics and atmospheric background art intended to capture the desolate, yet haunting beauty of the Martian landscape. Upon its release, the film was received as an experimental entry in Toei's catalog, notable for its distinct visual style even as it struggled to achieve the widespread critical or commercial footprint of the studio's more prominent franchises.
