Where it came from
Fancy Lala was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired in 1998 as part of the studio's legacy of magical girl anime, a genre they helped define in the 1980s. The series focuses on Miho Kawaguchi, a young girl who gains the ability to transform into a teenage pop idol named Lala through a magical pen and sketchbook. It emerged during a transitional period for the genre, focusing less on combat and more on the personal growth and professional aspirations of its young protagonist within the entertainment industry.
The character designs were created by Akemi Takada, a highly influential illustrator and designer known for her work on iconic series like Creamy Mami and Patlabor. Takada’s approach for Fancy Lala emphasized a soft, ethereal aesthetic that captured the dreams and innocence of the protagonist, aligning with the show's intent to offer a grounded, emotional narrative. While it may not have reached the cultural saturation of some of Pierrot's earlier massive hits, it remains a respected work among fans of 1990s character-driven anime for its nostalgic tone and visual polish.
