John is a cheerful and energetic young boy, who lives in a small coal-mining town in England. One day he finds a small dog lost in a flock of sheep. John takes him back home and names the puppy Lassie. Soon they become good friends, just like real siblings. Lassie is a very lovely and smart dog, so everyone in the town loves her very much.
But their happy life doesn't last long. Suddenly a coal-mine owner closes his company because there is no more coal left in the coal mine. John goes to meet the coal-mine owner to request a further investigation. The owner accepts John's request, but in exchange for that, he takes Lassie to Scotland.
Priscilla, the owner's granddaughter and also John's friend, cannot just stand by and let Lassie suffer in a cage. She opens the cage and sets Lassie free. Lassie sets out on a very long and hard journey from Scotland to her hometown.

Where it came from
Famous Dog Lassie, titled Meiken Lassie in Japan, was produced by Nippon Animation in 1996 as part of the studio's long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. This anthology collection was renowned for adapting classic Western literature into high-quality animated serials designed for family viewing. The production sought to reimagine the iconic Eric Knight character, Lassie, within the aesthetic and narrative framework of mid-nineties Japanese television, emphasizing themes of companionship, nature, and the pastoral setting of the original source material.
The series design was helmed by director Seiji Okuda, who aimed to provide a gentle, atmospheric interpretation of the boy-and-his-dog trope that had captivated global audiences for decades. By focusing on the emotional bond between the young protagonist and his collie, the production team maintained the sentimental tone characteristic of the studio's legacy. While the series was received with appreciation for its visual warmth and faithful spirit, it remains a distinct niche entry within the extensive history of the World Masterpiece Theater catalog.
