The story originated from a planned project for an online game that was later repurposed into a sprawling narrative centered on a Great Holy Grail War, featuring two opposing factions of Servants and Masters. This expansion of the Fate universe was designed to move away from the intimate scale of earlier entries, offering a broader conflict with a larger ensemble cast.

The animation direction, led by Yoshiyuki Asai, focused on balancing the intense action sequences required by the franchise's combat-heavy premise with the character-driven drama inherent to the Type-Moon lore.
