There was once a Holy Grail War waged by Mages and Heroic Spirits in a town of Fuyuki. However, one Mage took advantage of the chaos of World War II to steal a Holy Grail. Several decades have passed, and the Yggdmillennia family, who took upon the Holy Grail as its symbol, defected from the Mages' Association. Furious, the Association sent forces to deal with the Yggdmillennia, but were defeated. With the Holy Grail system changed, war at an unprecedented scale breaks out.

Where it came from
Fate/Apocrypha was produced by A-1 Pictures in 2017 as an anime adaptation of the light novel series written by Yuichiro Higashide and illustrated by Ototsugu Konoe. The story originated from a planned project for an online game that was later repurposed into a sprawling narrative centered on a Great Holy Grail War, featuring two opposing factions of Servants and Masters. This expansion of the Fate universe was designed to move away from the intimate scale of earlier entries, offering a broader conflict with a larger ensemble cast.
The animation direction, led by Yoshiyuki Asai, focused on balancing the intense action sequences required by the franchise's combat-heavy premise with the character-driven drama inherent to the Type-Moon lore. Upon its release, the series received attention for its high-budget production values and its ambitious attempt to juggle a high volume of historical and mythological characters, though it remains a subject of ongoing discussion among fans regarding its pacing and narrative density.
