Where it came from
Fate/Grand Carnival is a two-part original video animation series released in 2021 as a comedic spin-off of the Fate/Grand Order mobile game. Produced by the studio Lerche and directed by Seiji Kishi, the project was designed to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the game's Japanese release. It draws heavily from the tone and structure of Carnival Phantasm, a previous Type-Moon parody series, by placing the game's expansive roster of heroic spirits into mundane, absurd, and self-referential scenarios that deviate sharply from the main series' dramatic narrative.
The production sought to offer a lighthearted contrast to the often somber themes of the source material, leaning into established character quirks and fan-favorite tropes. The design choices prioritize rapid-fire humor and high-energy animation, reflecting the studio's desire to capture the chaotic charm of Type-Moon's collaborative works. Upon release, it was well-received by the established player base as a polished, fan-service-oriented tribute that effectively utilized the game's massive character catalog for comedic relief.
