Where it came from
The sunny day special was released in 2015 as a bonus episode included with the second Blu-ray box set of the ufotable adaptation of Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. Produced by studio ufotable under the direction of Takahiro Miura, this short was designed to provide an alternative, lighthearted conclusion to the series that diverged from the darker narrative arc of the main broadcast. It adapts a specific ending from the original visual novel, aiming to offer fans a more hopeful resolution for the protagonist Shirou Emiya and the character Saber.
The creative direction focused on maintaining the high production values and distinct visual style that ufotable established throughout the series. By juxtaposing the intense combat of the main storyline with the domestic tranquility of this short, the animation team intended to explore the softer aspects of the characters' lives after their conflict. Upon its release, the special was well-received by the existing fan community as a thoughtful acknowledgment of the visual novel's multifaceted endings, reinforcing the studio's commitment to honoring the source material.
