Where it came from
Feng Qi Luoyang: Shuangzi Zhui Xiong, or The Wind Blows from Luoyang: Twin Detectives, was released as an ONA in 2021 as part of the broader Luoyang transmedia franchise. Produced by iQIYI and inspired by the historical setting of the Tang Dynasty capital, the project sought to expand the fictional universe of Ma Boyong’s Luoyang narrative through a distinct animation style. It functions as a companion piece to the live-action series, focusing on a more stylized, suspense-driven mystery tailored to an animation-focused audience.
The production utilized high-contrast visual aesthetics to differentiate its atmospheric tone from the live-action iteration, aiming for a sharper, more dynamic portrayal of Luoyang's underworld. The narrative design prioritizes intricate investigative tropes common in period detective dramas, emphasizing tactical deduction and the complex social hierarchy of the era. Upon its release, it was received as a significant stylistic exercise within the Chinese animation industry, noted for its attempt to integrate historical lore with modern serialized storytelling techniques.
