Based on a traditional Chinese novel of the same name.
Bewitched by his concubine Daji, who is actually a vixen spirit in disguise as a beautiful woman, King Zhou of Shang oppresses his people and persecutes those who oppose him, including his own subjects who dare to speak up to him. Ji Fa (King Wu of Zhou), assisted by his strategist Jiang Ziya, rallies an army to overthrow the tyrant and restore peace and order. Throughout the story, battles are waged between the kingdoms of Shang and Zhou, with both sides calling upon various supernatural beings – deities, immortals, demons, spirits, and humans with magical abilities – to aid them in the war. Yuanshi Tianzun bestows upon Jiang Ziya the Fengshen Bang, a list that empowers him to invest the gods of Heaven. The heroes of Zhou and some of their fallen enemies from Shang are eventually endowed with heavenly ranking and essentially elevated to their roles as gods, hence the title of the novel.

Where it came from
Fengshen Bang, or The Investiture of the Gods, is a seminal 16th-century Chinese mythological novel that has served as the bedrock for numerous film and television adaptations. When these stories are brought to the screen, they typically draw from the Ming dynasty vernacular text attributed to Xu Zhonglin, which weaves together historical narrative and fantasy. These cinematic versions are designed to capture the grand scale of the original work, utilizing complex character dynamics and supernatural elements to depict the fall of the Shang Dynasty and the rise of the Zhou.
Film adaptations of this material often focus on the interplay between mortal rulers and immortal deities. The visual language of these productions is frequently rooted in traditional Chinese opera aesthetics blended with modern special effects to convey the power of the legendary artifacts and divine weaponry described in the text. While reception varies widely depending on the specific production era and technical execution, these films remain a vital touchstone for exploring themes of destiny, morality, and the cyclical nature of power in classical Chinese literature.
