Where it came from
Fights Break Sphere, known in Chinese as Doupo Cangqiong, was adapted into an ONA series by Foch studio starting in 2017. Based on the widely popular web novel by Tiancan Tudou, the production emerged during a period of rapid expansion for Chinese 3D animation, aiming to translate the high-fantasy cultivation genre into a visually ambitious episodic format. The project was conceived to satisfy a massive domestic fanbase, focusing on the journey of Xiao Yan within a world governed by martial arts and alchemical mastery.
The animation style, characterized by its extensive use of 3D modeling and dynamic combat choreography, was designed to emphasize the fluid, magical nature of the source material's battles. While the first season faced critical scrutiny regarding its pacing and early-generation rendering techniques, it succeeded in establishing the technical foundation for the series. Its reception played a pivotal role in shifting audience expectations for future high-budget Chinese animated productions, eventually leading to a marked improvement in aesthetic quality and storytelling depth in later installments.
