Fire Tripper

Fire Tripper was produced by Studio Pierrot and released as an original video animation in 1985. It is based on the manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi, who had already gained significant acclaim for works like Urusei Yatsura. The narrative follows a girl named Suzuko who is transported back to the Sengoku period, establishing the time-travel themes that would become a signature element of Takahashi's later epic, Inuyasha.

The production serves as a notable example of the mid-1980s OVA boom, which allowed animation studios to adapt shorter manga works with higher production values than typical weekly television series. Directed by Motosuke Takahashi, the aesthetic leans into the lush, atmospheric character designs characteristic of the era's hand-drawn cel animation. While it remains a niche entry in Takahashi’s filmography, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts as a key precursor to her more mainstream explorations of historical fantasy.
