Where it came from
First Light, known in Japan as Akeni Iku, is an animated feature film produced by the renowned publisher Kodansha and released in 2024. The film was developed as part of a strategic push by the studio to expand its intellectual property footprint into original cinematic storytelling, moving beyond traditional adaptation models to cultivate new narratives for global audiences.
The film's visual identity was spearheaded by director Yasuhiro Irie, who sought to blend traditional cel-shaded aesthetics with modern digital rendering techniques to create a distinct, ethereal atmosphere. Upon its release, the project was recognized for its grounded, character-driven narrative, with critics noting the director's attempt to focus on intimate emotional development rather than the high-octane spectacle common in contemporary animation.
