Where it came from
First Love Monster is a 2016 television anime series produced by Studio DEEN, adapted from the manga series by Akira Hiyoshimaru. The series explores a comedic and unconventional romantic dynamic between a high school student and a fifth-grade boy who happens to be the son of a wealthy family, using the tropes of shōjo manga to subvert expectations regarding maturity and age gaps.
The animation direction by Takayuki Inagaki sought to translate Hiyoshimaru’s distinct character designs into an expressive, often surreal visual style that emphasizes the absurdity of the premise. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its polarising tone and eccentric humor, which departed from standard romantic comedy conventions to focus on the awkwardness of its central conceit.
