Flower and Steam

Flower and Steam emerged from the esteemed animation program at Tokyo University of the Arts, known as Geidai Animation. Produced as a student project, the film reflects the rigorous academic environment and the experimental ethos fostered by the university’s faculty, which includes renowned industry veterans. It was created to demonstrate the mastery of technical craft while pushing the narrative boundaries often found in short-form independent animation.

The design of the film relies on a distinct aesthetic that blends organic, delicate floral motifs with the rigid, industrial textures implied by its title. The creators focused on a juxtaposition of nature and machinery, a recurring theme in Japanese animation that explores the intersection of tradition and modernity. Upon its release, it was noted for its visual sophistication and tonal atmospheric quality, earning it recognition within the competitive circuit of animation festivals.
