Traditionally, when a witch turns 15, she's supposed to go out into the world alone to study magic. Makoto's parents, however, believe that their directionally-challenged daughter should get a high school degree. Instead of being sent out on her own, Makoto and her cat Chito find themselves traveling from the bustling city of Yokohama to Aomori Prefecture, where they'll stay with relatives until Makoto finishes school. It's going to be a big adjustment, and it only gets more complicated since "normal" people aren't supposed to know that witches exist… something that she tends to forget.

Where it came from
Flying Witch was produced by the animation studio J.C.Staff and aired in 2016, adapted from the ongoing manga series by Chihiro Ishizuka. The project was directed by Katsushi Sakuragi, who aimed to translate the manga's unique slow-paced, atmospheric charm into an anime format. The series focuses on the daily life of a young witch named Makoto Kowata who moves to the rural Aomori Prefecture, emphasizing the mundane beauty of her surroundings rather than traditional magical conflict.
The aesthetic of the series is noted for its lush, detailed background art and a gentle, slice-of-life tone that distinguishes it from more action-oriented fantasy anime. Upon its release, the series received positive critical attention for its relaxing pace and the authentic depiction of Aomori's landscape. It is widely regarded as a standout example of the iyashikei or 'healing' genre, prioritizing mood and character interaction over complex plot developments.
