A tranquil tale about two boys from very different upbringings. On one hand you have Kai, born as the son of a prostitute, who's been playing the abandoned piano in the forest near his home ever since he was young. And on the other you have Shuuhei, practically breast-fed by the piano as the son of a family of prestigious pianists. Yet it is their common bond with the piano that eventually intertwines their paths in life.

Where it came from
Forest of Piano, known in Japan as Piano no Mori, was adapted into a television series by Studio Gaina in 2018. Based on the long-running manga series by Makoto Isshiki, the story follows the divergent paths of two young boys, Kai Ichinose and Shuhei Amamiya, as they navigate the rigorous world of professional piano competitions. The production sought to capture the emotional resonance and technical intensity of Isshiki's original illustrations, focusing heavily on the auditory experience of classical piano repertoire.
The 2018 anime adaptation marked a distinct shift from the 2007 feature film, aiming for a more serialized exploration of the characters' development over time. Directed by Gaku Nakatani, the series utilized 3D character modeling for the complex piano performance sequences to maintain visual consistency during high-speed playing. While the series received moderate critical reception for its faithfulness to the source material, it remains a notable entry in the subgenre of musical anime for its commitment to accurately representing the mechanics of concert-level musicianship.
