Where it came from
Fourth Period Swimming Class is an independent animated short produced by students at the Tokyo University of the Arts, or Geidai, under the guidance of the animation department's renowned faculty. The project was conceived as a creative capstone exercise, intended to showcase the technical proficiency and storytelling capabilities of emerging filmmakers within Japan's competitive animation landscape.
The film is characterized by a distinctive, hand-drawn aesthetic that emphasizes fluid motion and the nostalgic, mundane atmosphere of a school swimming pool. Eschewing the high-gloss polish of commercial studio anime, the production prioritizes texture and evocative framing. Upon its release within the university circuit and subsequent screenings at regional film festivals, it was well-received by critics for its minimalist approach and its ability to capture a fleeting, sensory experience through traditional animation techniques.
