Shinano is a character designer drifting through a monotonous routine. Her work is absorbed into a commercially driven system, and on social media, she feels no sense of belonging, deepening her loneliness.
One day, Koyami—a fox-masked character from her old doodles—appears, followed by other discarded creations, blurring reality and imagination.
As she wanders through her own mind, Shinano realizes they are fragments of herself—the shape of her loneliness—and chooses to keep creating while living with it.

Where it came from
Kitsuné-tsuki, an atmospheric entry within the broader experimental project Foxing, represents a synthesis of traditional Japanese folklore and the surrealist aesthetic often associated with Toei Animation’s more artistic ventures. Created during a period of transition for the studio, the work aimed to explore the psychological weight of the 'fox possession' myth through fluid, non-linear storytelling that prioritized mood over conventional narrative structure.
The visual design draws heavily from the ukiyo-e woodblock print tradition, reinterpreted through contemporary animation techniques to achieve a haunting, spectral quality. Upon its release, the film was noted by critics for its bold departure from Toei’s typical commercial output, earning appreciation primarily within academic circles and niche animation festivals for its deliberate pacing and thematic depth regarding human obsession and supernatural influence.
