The story revolves around Haruka Nanase, a boy who has always loved to be immersed in water, and to swim in it. Before graduating from elementary school, he participated in a swimming tournament along with his fellow swimming club members, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka. After achieving victory, each of the boys went their separate ways.
Time passed, and in the middle of their uneventful high school lives Rin appears and challenges Haruka to a match, showing Haruka his overwhelming power. Not wanting it to end like this, Haruka, gathers together Makoto and Nagisa once again and brings a new member named Rei Ryugazaki to create the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club in order to defeat Rin.

Where it came from
Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club- was produced by Kyoto Animation and Animation Do, premiering in 2013 as an original television series inspired by the light novel High Speed! by Koji Oji. The project emerged from a promotional commercial titled 'Swimming,' which went viral and generated significant fan interest, prompting the studio to develop a full-length series focused on the bonds of friendship, competition, and the daily lives of a high school swimming club.
The series is noted for its high-fidelity animation, particularly in the fluid, realistic depiction of water physics and athletic movement. Directed by Hiroko Utsumi, the design philosophy prioritized vibrant character aesthetics and emotional depth, moving away from traditional sports anime tropes to emphasize the personal growth of the protagonists. It received a warm critical reception for its technical quality and remains a hallmark of the studio's mid-2010s output.
