Where it came from
Free! The Final Stroke: The First Volume was released in 2021 as the first half of a two-part cinematic conclusion to Kyoto Animation's long-running sports anime franchise, Free!. Produced by the studio's renowned animation team, the film continues the story of Haruka Nanase as he competes on the world stage, reflecting the studio's signature attention to fluid character movement and emotionally resonant storytelling.
The film's visual identity remains deeply tied to Kyoto Animation's tradition of vibrant, detailed aesthetics. Following the tragic 2019 arson attack on the studio, the production of this final arc was widely viewed by the public and industry as a testament to the resilience of the creators. The direction, handled by long-time franchise collaborator Eisaku Kawanami, aimed to provide a definitive and reflective end to a decade-long narrative of friendship and athletic dedication.
