Where it came from
Released in October 2017, Free! -Take Your Marks- serves as a bridge between the second and third seasons of the Kyoto Animation series Free!. It was produced as a collection of four short stories that follow the protagonists Haruka Nanase and Makoto Tachibana as they prepare for life after high school, maintaining the franchise's emphasis on themes of friendship, transition, and the dedication required for competitive swimming.
The film was directed by Eisaku Kawanami, who took over the directorial reins for the franchise following the initial series run. The production sought to provide a lighter, character-focused epilogue to the high-stakes narrative of the second season, emphasizing Kyoto Animation's signature fluid character animation and detailed background art. Upon its theatrical release in Japan, it was well-received by fans of the series for its focus on character development and its gentle transition toward the events of the subsequent 'Dive to the Future' arc.
