Fruits Basket (2019)

The 2019 adaptation of Fruits Basket was produced by TMS Entertainment as a complete retelling of Natsuki Takaya’s original manga series. While the initial 2001 anime adaptation by Studio Deen was widely cherished, it diverged significantly from the source material due to being produced while the manga was still in its early stages. This 2019 version was commissioned to faithfully adapt the entirety of the story, ensuring that the complex emotional arcs and the full scope of the Zodiac curse were realized according to Takaya’s vision.

Directed by Yoshihide Ibata and overseen by Takaya herself as the executive supervisor, the series was designed to balance the series’ signature whimsical humor with the heavier, often somber themes of trauma, abandonment, and healing. The production team focused on a refreshed, modern aesthetic that paid homage to the manga's art style while utilizing contemporary animation techniques. Upon its release, the series received critical acclaim for its narrative fidelity, character depth, and its ability to resonate with both long-time fans of the original work and a new generation of viewers.
